Top Gear Live, BBC

Project Description

CLIENT: BBC’s Top Gear

Top Gear Live brings stunts and road tests to an arena audience. In 2010 the team considered concepts for a unique, show-stopping finale.

The result? A car that becomes invisible. A bespoke motor Bond would be proud of.

Create a car capable of disappearing during a spectacular driving sequence and incorporate a convertible roof to facilitate stunts.

This exciting and remarkable project deftly demonstrates our enthusiasm for expanding the range of Smartglass specifications and pushing the boundaries of smart glass technology.

Having initially been approached to investigate whether the concept was viable or not, Smartglass International identified polycarbonate as a more appropriate material from which to craft the panels. Collaborating during the design phase it became apparent that in order to realise the illusion, each panel had to switch states simultaneously. We achieved this through the intricate wiring of smaller panels.

“Smartglass International were a great partner working meticulously with me to develop the car panels required for this unique hyper car and proved to be the perfect solution to a problem no one thought they’d ever have; how do I turn my car see through?”
