CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the
world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. SmartGlass International recently completed a unique project using solar control SPD SmartGlass at CERN’s prestigious Globe of Science and Innovation.

LC SmartGlass Helps Patient Recovery

The concept of healing environments in hospitals emerged as one where
the environment can make a difference in how quickly a patient
recovers. It has been proven that patients experience a faster recovery in an environment that incorporates natural light. LC SmartGlass offers privacy on demand whilst still allowing for 67% light transmission when switched to its “Off” state.

Smart Privacy Glass Improves Productivity

86% of productivity problems reside in the work environment of organizations with 73% of office workers surveyed stating natural daylight was extremely important. LC SmartGlass provides simple, instantaneous and reversible states of
transparency with minimal alteration of light level making it an ideal
solution for office interiors where ample lighting is fundamental.

MRSA Found on 1 in 5 Hospital Curtains

A recent study by the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in Ohio, USA found that;

CDIFF, MRSA and VRE can be found on hospital privacy curtains
43% percent of privacy curtains in the study were contaminated with VRE, 22 percent of
them harboured MRSA and four percent tested positive for CDIFF
Infectious bugs transferred onto the hands of people who handled the contaminated
curtains and these super bugs were spread rapidly within seconds

Rem Koolhaas and his team at OMA are the object of global fascination by architects and followers of architecture the world over having worked on a series of prestigious projects including the Shenzhen Stock Exchange Building and the Central China Television Headquarters Building in Beijing. LC SmartGlass was recently installed within the new state of the art Rothschild Investment Bank Headquarters in London, the latest project by Koolhaas and the OMA team.

LC SmartGlass @ London Bridge Hospital

LC SmartGlass was recently installed at the prestigious London Bridge Hospital. The hospital opened in 1986 following the redevelopment of Chamberlain’s Wharf. London Bridge Hospital along with several other well known private hospitals in London belong to HCA International, the largest private operator of health care facilities in the world.

Viking River Cruise Ships Set Sail

LC SmartGlass was recently installed on the new state of the art Freya & Idun Ships, two of four longship class-vessels launching as part of Vikings expansion program. Expertly designed by Yran & Storbraaten, the team behind The Yachts of Seabourn, these new vessels offer state-of-the-art engineering, design and comfort.

LC SmartGlass @ PSA Kuwait Cup

The Professional Squash Association Kuwait Cup took place in Kuwait City from 23rd-29th November.

SmartGlass International supplied a series of LC
SmartGlass panels to create two large rear projection screens for either side of the centre court at the tournament. Before players entered the court their national flag was projected onto the screen and when the LC SmartGlass was switched to its “On” state the player was revealed through the clear glass screen before entering the court.

Eccleston Square @ European Hospitality Awards

Eccleston Square Hotel received the “In-Room Technology Innovation of the Year” Award at this years European Hospitality Awards which took place on 4th November. The association aims to bring the European Hotel community together and
recognises particular achievements of the best hotel properties around
Europe.

LC SmartGlass is installed in each bedroom at Eccleston Square Hotel separating bedroom from bathroom instantly at the flick of a switch.

SPD SmartGlass – Improving Management of Light in Museums

In the museum sector there is a clear dilemma: the more we exhibit works
of art, the more light damage they incur; conversely, reducing light
levels impedes the safety and enjoyment of visitors. The museum sector also uses timer-controlled artificial lighting to
protect priceless and irreplaceable works of art. One such example is the
Ardabil Carpet in London, shown in the image accross, which is illuminated for just
10 minutes every half hour in order to limit light damage.SPD SmartGlass provides a localised and configurable level of protection for light sensitive works of art.Read more…

In the museum sector there is a clear dilemma: the more we exhibit works
of art, the more light damage they incur. Museums tend to apply a One-Size-Fits-All approach to light management,
placing entire exhibitions in semi-darkness and then using directed
artificial lighting which can cause focussed deterioration on
light-sensitive materials. SPD SmartGlass is the ideal solution to this dilemma allowing the optimum balance point between protection and exposition to light.

LC Smart Mirror Glass

LC SmartGlass panels are bespoke manufactured using a lamination process
which encapsulates a PDLC film between 2 or more glass sheets. Mirror glass is used as one of the glass sheets so
that when the glass is switched to its “on” state a reflective surface
is revealed.

When the electrical supply is switched “on”, the liquid crystal
molecules align and incident light passes through the LC SmartGlass
panel allowing it to instantly clear revealing the reflective mirror
glass. When the power is switched “off” the liquid crystal molecules are
randomly oriented scattering light and the LC SmartGlass becomes opaque
(private).

Case Study – Eccleston Square Hotel

Eccleston Square Hotel is a new, hi-tech, luxury, boutique design hotel bordering Belgravia in the heart of Central London SW1.
LC SmartGlass was used to create a partition separating bedroom and bathroom in each room. Switchable SmartGlass was the ideal solution to create a bright open space as it not only lets more light into the bathroom but also gives the impression of increased space throughout the entire room.

AIS – Product Innovation Award 2011

The 2011 AIS Best Practice Awards will take place on November 18th. Judged by a panel of experts from relevant industry fields, the awards recognise outstanding innovation in the commercial interiors industry. SPD SmartGlass for Museum Interiors

Improving the management of light in museums – Museums wishing to comply with Green Building Council requirements on the greater use of natural daylight are now facing a dilemma in balancing the works of art conservation issue by reducing photo-chemical damage of light-sensitive objects.

LC SmartGlass – A Smart Security Solution

Up until recently, safety glass and privacy glass have been seen as two seemingly mutually exclusive products. However, with SmartGlass Internationals LC SmartGlass, both products can be merged to produce the ultimate security solution. LC SmartGlass can be combined with the latest ballistic, fire and attack resistant glass to create a safe, secure privacy screen able to withstand force.

LC SmartGlass is easily installed and can be utilized in many applications. Various configurations can be supplied including color tinted, fire rated, double glazed, curved and shaped. LC SmartGlass is tested to in excess of 1,000,000 cycles under a low voltage post-production making it an eco-friendly sustainable security glass solution.

LC SmartGlass was recently installed at the Swords Central post office in Dublin Ireland to create a privacy screen separating the Head of Security office and the customer forecourt. This allows security to switch the glass “on” when they wish to view activity on the shop floor and “off” where privacy is required instantly at the flick of a switch.

LC SmartGlass @ West Wales Hospital

West Wales General Hospital is a 391-bed major acute secondary care hospital, in Carmarthenshire. LC SmartGlass was specified for this project to separate treatment rooms instantly at the flick of a switch delivering privacy on demand without the use of curtains/blinds.
Care staff at West Wales Hospital can now monitor patient activity within each room by using a remote control to switch the glass to its clear state. Where privacy is required, the LC SmartGlass can be switched to its opaque “off” state instantly, protecting patient privacy and dignity…

RIBA Restaurant & Bar Design Awards

This years Restaurant & Bar Design Awards are just around the corner. SmartGlass International will sponsor the Design Awards at a prestigious ceremony and party held in London’s East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf on 7th July 2011.

The ceremony will be attended by the UK and world’s top architects, interior designers and hospitality operators.

LC SmartGlass @ Eccleston Square Hotel London

Hidden within a striking late Georgian townhouse on a leafy square in Pimlico, central London, lies Eccleston Square Hotel – a high-tech 39-bedroom urban retreat boasting a series of state-of-the-art technology, including LC SmartGlass, 46 inch 3D LED televisions and iPad2s in every room.
Following a GBP 6.5 million renovation, the Georgian townhouse has been transformed by architects Woods Bagot, led by Hotel Director Olivia Byrne who is from a successful hotelier family. “The ethos of the Eccleston Square Hotel is quite simple,” she explains. “We want our clients to leave the hotel feeling better than they did when they arrived.”Read More…

SmartGlass International on ITV’s “The Cube”

The Cube is a BAFTA award winning game show which first aired on ITV on 22 August 2009. Presented by Philip Schofield, it offers contestants the chance to win a top prize of £250,000 by completing challenges from within a 4x4x4 metre perspex cube. The show is based on the idea that even straightforward tasks become extremely challenging when confined and put under pressure in front of a large live studio audience.
LC SmartGlass will be used as part of a new challenge within the Cube, this new challenge is due to air this Summer.

SPD SmartGlass makes it into “The Green List”

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) released “The Green List” in their June Issue of Modus Magazine to celebrate all things sustainable in todays world.
A total of 50 people, projects, innovations and initiatives helping to create a greener global built environment are included on the list.

SPD SmartGlass is featured in 17th place on the Green List as it can be manually or automatically “tuned” to precisely control the amount of light, glare and heat passing through a window which in turn dramatically reduces a buildings cooling/heating energy requirements.
