SPD Glass

SPD Glass or (suspended particle device) glass is miracle advancement in modern glass technology that transforms translucent glass to an opaque state by simply flipping a switch. The engineering behind it all is however not as simple as the application of it. In simple terms, SPD is thin film laminate made up of miniscule rod like particles which are pendant within a liquid. This film is then sandwiched between two layers of glass, or simply attached to one layer.

The rod like particles react to a electric current, so when no energy is applied the particles are randomly orientated and tend to absorb light, resulting in the glass appearing either completely opaque, or in a colour like blue, grey or black. Once voltage is applied, the particles instantly line up, letting light in and transforming the glass back to its initial translucent state.

The avant-garde element of the film as compared to traditional glass is the fact that its applications are virtually limitless. SPD Glass is not limited to regular shaped flat glass and can be used with custom shaped windows or even curved glass.
This technology is applied in a multitude of applications including:

• Architecturally designed living spaces can benefit from the elements of simplicity and cleanliness smart glass can achieve by eliminating unnecessary clutter. Eradication of this disarray permits the designer to implement other design components more relevant to the ultimate expression and function of the given space.
• People react to the ambience of rooms and spaces. For instance, fluorescent lighting in hospitals create a clinical atmosphere whereas candlelit spaces create a more romantic environment. SPD glass affords the user total control over light levels within a space.
• Large architectural structures often have large glass panels to create a more natural sensation within. In such instances SPD glass is used as a tool to reduce an inevitable glare, increase security and reduce UV rays.

SPD glass brought to you by SmartGlass International will not only enable you to have complete control of your light levels, but also protect you from unwanted UV rays, act as a security measure and save on energy.
