Liquid Crystal Glass - Installation

Glaziers and electrical contractors installing SmartGlass International LC glass should observe the following guidelines.

SmartGlass International LC glass is intended primarily for internal applications. It is possible to place the LC panels side by side, with a transparent silicone seal in between. In that case, the buzz bars are always placed at the upper and lower edges of the glass, and are hidden by the horizontal profile. There will however be a clear strip of up to 3mm running on the edges of each pane; this should be taken into account by the architect or specifier when deciding which framing method to use.

SmartGlass International LC glass may also be used in external glazing - subject to approval by our Technical Department. When used externally it will most often be assembled into double or triple glazed units with the inner pane incorporating the LC film.

FRAME APPLICATION

To fix SmartGlass International LC glass the fitter must check that limits and dimensions are being respected. Any pressure increase on the glazing is to be strictly avoided. The fitter will preferably use an earthed metal frame. The rebate should be drained in exterior applications.

Theoretically, frames used for traditional curtain walling can be used. In this case, it is very important to ensure that no moisture can enter into the connection area. The connection has to be done on the bead, under the part of the frame that covers the frame, after installing the glass.

SEAL & SILICONE

Dry joints are recommended. This applies to EPDM, chloroprene or extruded silicone joints. For silicon seals apply both inside and outside using either DOW 995 or 1199 or GE Bayer Multisil, a neutral, non-acetic silicone.

BUTT JOINT GLAZING

The diagram above shows the silicone joint requirements. SmartGlass International LC glass is supplied with polished edges allowing for safe and accurate installation.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

The placement and the connection must be executed and conform to the legislation regarding the electrical installation and under the responsibility of the electrician.

LC Glass Electrical Installation Diagram

The diagram above shows the correct electrical installation for two LC glass panels, the same methodology can be used for more or less panels. Please ensure that the glass panels are connected prior to applying power. SmartGlass International will specify and supply the correct power conditioner relevant to the LC glass area being installed. Bespoke controllers can be designed and manufactures to meet specific requirements. Remote control units can be supplied pre-wired and ready for installation. Contact SmartGlass International for any questions.

The different LC glass panels have to be connected in parallel. One or several distribution boxes can be used dependant on requirements.

Before the voltage is turned on, please check if the window has been connected.

Do not connect on two transformers at the same time. If several power conditioners are mounted, a space of 5c to 10cm has to be allowed between the units. Also keep a free space of approximately 5cm around the transformers. To obtain optimal heat dissipation we advise to mount the transformers vertically.

TYPES OF CABLES

In function of the installation, different types of cables can be used.

Jacket protection via PVC tube: H05VV-F 1,5mm2, international cable type

Jacket protection via cable: BS 6004 (United Kingdom)

It is recommended that a separate cable tray be established to power SmartGlass International LC glass.Customers are obliged to use shielded cables so as to avert any onsite interferences between the various items of electrical/electronic equipment.

SWITCH

The switch generally has to be provided by the electrician unless otherwise agreed. Each type of switch can be used, provided that it is conforms to requirements. The following types are sufficient: the classical switch (on/off), radio remote control (ex. Infrared system), photoelectric cell, smart home cpu software, Security device, or timer. Dimmer devices are forbidden, in the primary and in the secondary power supply loop and should not be used.

ATTENTION!!!

The switch must be placed in the primary power supply loop. A switch placed between the transformer and the window, will damage the LC Glass. When the installation is equipped with several transformers, these transformers can be activated by one switch in the primary circuit.
